Pole Shift Warning the Government Classified
Elite Survival Plans Exposed
The CIA, a classified book about planetary catastrophe, and the people quietly digging underground: a fresh look at the evidence hiding in plain sight
Sometime around 1965, a book called The Adam and Eve Story landed in the possession of people whose job was to know about threats. The CIA eventually classified it.1 When a FOIA request forced its partial release in 2013, the agency produced 57 of the manuscript’s 284 pages. The remaining 227 have never been accounted for, and no official explanation for the original classification has ever been given.
Chan Thomas held degrees from Dartmouth and Columbia and had spent much of his career inside the aerospace industry’s most restricted divisions, designing missile guidance systems for Bell Aircraft, working on the A4D Skyhawk at Douglas Aircraft, and eventually joining McDonnell Douglas’s Advanced Concepts division, where engineers were paid to think through scenarios companies were not yet ready to discuss in public.2 His dedication page named General Curtis LeMay, who built Strategic Air Command, and Admiral Rufus Taylor, who ran the CIA’s clandestine service. Neither of those men was given to endorsing speculation.
Thomas’s core argument was that Earth’s crust is not as fixed as geology textbooks suggest. Every 6,500 years or so, he proposed, a confluence of factors produces a catastrophic slippage: the crust shifts, oceans follow, the land surface is rendered largely unrecognizable within days, and then a new equilibrium forms, and whatever survived starts over.3 His evidence came partly from ancient volcanic rock at Steens Mountain in Oregon, Skalamaelifell Hill in Iceland, and sampling sites in Tahiti, where the magnetic minerals locked into lava as it cooled record the geomagnetic field rotating by dozens of degrees across a single flow, not over millennia of gradual drift but within what the cooling rate suggests was days or weeks of eruption.4
He also pointed to a sea-level jump roughly 14,700 years ago, measured by geologists at approximately 13 meters within a window that looks unusually compressed by any standard geological baseline. The flood accounts that appear independently across Mesopotamian, Hebrew, Vedic, and Greek sources he treated not as allegory but as testimony from people who had witnessed something that actually happened.5
Academic geology has never accepted this. The geomagnetic reversal process takes thousands to tens of thousands of years to complete, according to the consensus view. The mechanical forces required for crustal displacement of this scale do not exist in any model current physics can accommodate. The flood narratives are cultural artifacts. These objections carry weight, and researchers who raise them are not wrong to do so. They do not, however, quite account for what the planet’s magnetic field has been doing since the 1990s.6
The Pole Is Moving. Faster Than It Ever Has.
Magnetic north has drifted since humans first started tracking it. Explorer James Clark Ross fixed its position near the Canadian Arctic in 1831,7 and over the following century and a half it moved at roughly 15 kilometers per year, a predictable creep that navigation systems absorbed without difficulty. Starting in the 1990s the rate changed. By the early 2000s the pole was covering 55 kilometers per year, a fourfold increase that NOAA geophysicist Arnaud Chulliat described as ‘unprecedented as far as the records we have.’ As of 2025, it has crossed into the Russian hemisphere for the first time in the recorded history of magnetic observation.
The World Magnetic Model underpins navigation in smartphones, commercial aircraft, and military systems worldwide, updated every five years by U.S. and British defense agencies. When the pole’s movement became erratic enough to push the model outside acceptable error tolerances, an emergency correction was issued in 2019,8 a year ahead of schedule. The December 2024 release added a supplementary high-resolution variant called WMMHR2025, improving spatial accuracy tenfold, and for the first time designated blackout zones near the poles where the field is too weak and unstable for reliable magnetic navigation.
A 2025 assessment of geomagnetic conditions documented a jerk, meaning a sudden change in the rate of field acceleration, beginning in late 2023 and continuing through 2024.9 The South Atlantic Anomaly, a persistent region over South America and the southern Atlantic where Earth’s magnetic field runs dramatically weaker than the global average, grew by 8 percent in a single year. Satellites crossing it absorb radiation that degrades their electronics. Measured across the full span of direct instrumental observation, roughly two centuries, total field strength has declined by approximately 9 percent.10
Scientists are careful to note that none of these figures constitute evidence of an imminent reversal. Less discussed is the fact that we have never actually observed a geomagnetic reversal while it was in progress, that the mechanisms thought to trigger one remain openly contested, and that the Laschamps excursion 41,500 years ago, a brief period when the field weakened and shifted, correlates with a pulse of megafaunal extinctions across multiple continents.11
The Book That Could Not Be Explained Away
Charles Hapgood arrived at a similar conclusion through different evidence. A professor at Keene State College in New Hampshire, he published Earth’s Shifting Crust in 1958 with a foreword by Albert Einstein,12 arguing that the slow accumulation of polar ice could create enough rotational imbalance to cause the entire lithosphere to slip over the mantle beneath it. Einstein read the manuscript before publication, found the argument worth taking seriously, and corresponded with Hapgood for years before his death in 1955. Nobody has ever produced a definitive refutation of the basic mechanism.
Graham Hancock has spent decades building an archaeological case around Göbekli Tepe, a complex of intricately carved stone pillars in southeastern Turkey dated to roughly 12,500 years ago, predating any previously recognized organized civilization by several thousand years.13 Whoever built it later buried the site deliberately, which is not the behavior of a society with no reason to preserve or hide what it had made. Randall Carlson has assembled geological and crater evidence for a major cosmic impact approximately 12,900 years ago, timed to catastrophic flooding events across North America and the abrupt disappearance of the Pleistocene megafauna.14 Hancock and Carlson are working from the premise that somewhere between the end of the last ice age and the beginning of recorded history, something large enough to disrupt civilization happened, and the mainstream academy has not fully accounted for it.
Quiet Preparations for an Unnamed Event
Douglas Rushkoff, a media theorist at Queens College, received an invitation in 2018 to address what he was told would be a tech industry audience at a private desert resort. When he arrived, there was no audience. Five of the most powerful technology investors in the world were waiting with specific questions: which location, Alaska or New Zealand, would be more defensible after what they called ‘the Event’; how to maintain authority over private security forces once currency had lost its meaning; whether building above or below ground was more survivable. Rushkoff had spent his career studying how powerful people use technology. He found himself being consulted on the logistics of outlasting civilization. The account became the opening of his 2022 book Survival of the Richest.15
Reid Hoffman, co-founder of LinkedIn, explained to the New Yorker in 2017 that purchasing property in New Zealand had become a kind of coded signal among Silicon Valley’s billionaire class. ‘Saying you’re buying a house in New Zealand,’ he said, ‘is kind of a wink, wink, say no more.’ He estimated that more than half of the billionaires in his social circle had acquired some form of what he called apocalypse insurance.16
Peter Thiel obtained New Zealand citizenship in 2011, having spent twelve days in the country.17 By 2015 he had purchased a 193-hectare estate on the South Island’s Lake Wanaka for a reported $13.5 million, then retained Kengo Kuma and Associates, the firm that designed the Tokyo Olympic Stadium, to build a compound stretching 330 meters along the lakefront.18 The Queenstown Lakes District Council rejected the design in 2022 as too visually intrusive. Thiel appealed. The Environment Court rejected it again in 2024, and as of the most recent reporting the site remains undeveloped.19
Sam Altman told the New Yorker in 2016 that his contingency plan in a catastrophic scenario was to fly to New Zealand with Thiel.20 Mark Zuckerberg has been building on the Hawaiian island of Kauai since at least 2014. County planning documents obtained by Hawaii News Now describe a nearly 4,500-square-foot underground shelter accessible through a tunnel, sealed by a door of metal reinforced with poured concrete.21 WIRED’s December 2023 investigation found the structure was designed for energy and food independence, and everyone who worked on it signed a nondisclosure agreement.22 When asked what exactly he had built, Zuckerberg told a Bloomberg interviewer in December 2024 that it was ‘like a basement.’
Bill Gates has reportedly installed underground security spaces at several U.S. properties.23 Larry Ellison bought essentially all of the Hawaiian island of Lanai in 2012. James Cameron left the United States, settled in New Zealand, converted former dairy land to organic food production, and in February 2025 disclosed he was in the final stages of obtaining New Zealand citizenship.24
Outside Edgemont, South Dakota, a company called Vivos has been converting a former Army munitions depot into the largest private survival community ever assembled. The site covers 18 square miles. Its 575 concrete bunkers were built in 1942 to withstand a 500,000-pound internal detonation; each accommodates between 10 and 24 occupants with a year of supplies.25 Vivos operates a second facility somewhere in Europe and reports a 300-person installation on New Zealand’s South Island.26
Catherine Austin Fitts, who served as assistant secretary of housing and urban development under President George H.W. Bush, has argued that trillions of dollars in federal expenditures she traced through HUD budgets had no publicly disclosed destination. In an April 2025 interview with Tucker Carlson, she claimed the money has been directed toward underground infrastructure, approximately 170 facilities being built in preparation for what she described as a near-extinction geophysical event, some of them beneath the ocean floor.27
The broader pattern; wealthy and connected people quietly investing in deep-underground survival infrastructure while publicly dismissing any concern about geophysical risk, is not a theory. It is documented in planning applications, real estate filings, and the people building these things occasionally saying so themselves.
What the Science Has Not Yet Explained
The Holocene, the warm interglacial period in which all of recorded human civilization developed, is approximately 11,700 years old. Interglacials driven by the orbital mechanics known as Milankovitch cycles typically run between 10,000 and 15,000 years. A 2012 paper in Nature Geoscience concluded that the current interglacial should have ended several thousand years ago by standard orbital calculation, and that industrial-era warming appears to have extended it.28
R.S. Coe and colleagues published findings in Nature in 1995 that have been quietly troubling paleomagnetists ever since.29 The magnetic minerals in the Steens Mountain lava flows in Oregon, which lock in the field’s orientation as rock solidifies, record directional changes at rates suggesting the field moved several degrees per day during a geomagnetic excursion roughly 16 million years ago. The measurements are not in dispute. Their implication, that the field can change orders of magnitude faster than prevailing models predict, has never been satisfactorily resolved. The same signature appears in Icelandic lavas and samples taken from Tahiti.
Tambora, an Indonesian volcano, erupted in 1815 with enough force to eject sulfate aerosols into the upper atmosphere and drop average global temperatures for over a year.30 Harvests failed across Europe and North America in 1816. Tambora was a medium-sized event by geological standards. The record contains eruptions orders of magnitude larger, and a growing body of research suggests geomagnetic instability may be causally linked to periods of heightened volcanism through changes in magma behavior and cosmic ray flux.
Since 2008, the Svalbard Global Seed Vault has been storing agricultural varieties inside a mountain on the Norwegian island of Spitsbergen, one of the more remote inhabited places on the planet. The Norwegian government manages it in partnership with the Crop Trust; it now holds more than 1.3 million seed varieties, the most comprehensive biological archive of cultivated food-crop diversity ever assembled.31 The vault is not framed publicly as a response to any specific threat. It does not need to be.
None of this constitutes proof that Thomas was right about the mechanism. What it constitutes is a set of anomalies, some measured and published, some documented in planning records and real estate filings, that official communication has consistently declined to connect. The people with the most sophisticated access to sensitive information on the planet are treating the underlying question with a seriousness their public statements do not reflect.
The 227 Pages Nobody Has Explained
When the CIA released its partial version of The Adam and Eve Story in 2013, it offered no rationale for why the book had ever been classified.32 A speculative geophysics manuscript by a private citizen would not ordinarily fall under fifty-year classification protocols. The agency’s position, to whatever degree it has one, is that the book touched on matters of intelligence relevance in 1965. What a civilian theory about periodic crustal catastrophe could have threatened, from a counterintelligence standpoint, has never been specified.
The 57 released pages are unusual enough. The other 227 have never been explained.
Thomas died without seeing his work reconsidered. He spent years after the original publication insisting the physical record was legible to anyone who looked at it without institutional commitments to a particular model. He believed the public had a right to know. Someone with more authority over classification decisions concluded otherwise.
Fifty years classified while the rest of us were told to look the other way. Billionaires pouring fortunes into structures that rise in silence. The field accelerating beyond anything publicly acknowledged, emergency navigation alerts still dropping into official channels like quiet warnings nobody heeds. Property records, peer-reviewed papers, land transfers, crews arriving at dawn: every thread visible if anyone bothered to pull. Yet no official has ever connected them in a single breath. No senator demanded answers under oath. No president faced the cameras and explained why half a century of secrecy shields this while the world burns through its ordinary crises.
This isn’t oversight or bureaucracy lagging behind. It’s deliberate. A handful of the powerful preparing for something the rest aren’t meant to survive, or even know about, in time. Keeping the knowledge compartmentalized, the preparations exclusive, the escape routes reserved. That kind of foreknowledge hoarded while humanity as a whole is left blind and undefended is more than negligence. It’s a profound betrayal of the species itself.
The silence has held for generations now. The work never stopped. We don’t get to pretend surprise anymore. The only question left is how much longer we let it stand unchallenged.
